NWSL: Gotham crushes North Carolina, Thorns beat Houston to clinch shield

Gotham FC beat North Carolina Cougars in a donating fashion to jump up two spots, reaching fifth while Cougars slipped to the seventh spot. The game remained goalless till the half but Gotham broke the game open in the following period.

Margaret Purce nailed two goals at the fifty-four and sixty-four-minute spot to give the team a two-nil. Then, Carli Loyd, who is in her farewell season, sent a 20-yard ball flying into the net. Gotham has won three of the last five games and the other two games turned to be drawn.

Houston lost to Portland in a riveting affair. Portland’s Lindsey Horan nailed the soal goal of the game a few minutes before the end of the second half. Houston controlled 52% of the time, had 13 attempts and five shots on target, meanwhile, Portland had 16 tries and also five attempts on target.

With the win, Portland has gained 43 points and is seated t the top of the table whereas Houston is hanging on to the last spot for the Playoffs by a thread after the loss, tied at 32 points with North Carolina. With the win, the Thorns also clinched the NWSL shield title.
