USA has lived up to expectations and opened up a three-one lead on the first day of the Ryder Cup. For Europe, Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia beat the team of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas three and one. Tyrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, and Viktor Hovland picked up the other half points for the European in what largely remained an underwhelmed day.
USA’s Bryson DeChambeu mesmerised around 40,000 home fans when he nailed a drive 417 yards down the fourth-fifth put. In the foursomes, Xander Schaufelle and Patrick Cantlay marked the USA’s domination, while Tony Finau and Harris English came through in the fourballs.
We've had some things that came up and bit us in the rear in other Ryder Cups. These guys know that, and they are focused on coming out strong again. My message to the guys before I left was to try to win that first session again and pretend Friday never happened.
